Making A 'Stoned Fly'

Step 1: The materials required to make the 'Stoned Fly'
Step 2: Set the hook into the vice
Step 3: Attach The Egg
Step 4: Wrap
Step 5: Varnish 1
Step 6: Floss Over
Step 7: Continue With Thread
Step 8: Varnish 2
Step 9: Varnish 3
Step 10: Detailing

Step 1: The materials required to make the 'Stoned Fly'

The following materials are required:

Hook : H/weight grub/shrimp hook - sizes #14 - #8
Thread : Uni Big Fly - colour of choice
Weight : 0.37mm lead wire and Stonefly Thorax Body Lead
Rib : Two contrasting colour strands of tying thread
Varnish : Seymo Pro-Rod varnish clear and coloured with Dylon or veniard dye

The tyer can help matters a lot by the choice of tying thread, in this case it is 'Big Fly' thread from UNI Products. It is good for this fly because it works like a floss thread.

When mixing the dye into the Pro- Rod Varnish, add small quantities until the required shade is reached. Remember that you will be applying successive coats of varnish so there will be a colour build up, therefore a 'wash' of colour is preferrable to the 'one hit' approach.

Note:
Some dyes contain chemicals that react with the varnish causing it to congeal after a short while, this is not a problem providing the varnish is to be used immediately, in some cases, with some mixes, it won't have a shelf life.

Step 6: Floss Over

Cover the lead wire with the 'floss' tying thread, and tie in two contrasting strands of thread for the rib.

Step 7: Continue With Thread

Continue to build the thread, until a smooth taper is achieved, then holding the two ribs together, wrap them forwards in open EVEN turns. Try to keep them together and at the same time, don't allow them to twist. Secure and trim waste.
