Guide Fitting
A step-by-step guide to Guide Fitting
Measure and mark with chinagraph pencil, where you want the rings to go. |
Place the centre of your rod ring directly over the mark and tape in place with low-tack masking tape. |
Wind your thread around the blank and over itself so that it crosses itself. This will trap the first part of the whip. |
After you have reached the edge of the tape, slightly stretch the loose thread and cut off, the tag end should disappear under the whipping. |
Carry on whipping for about 6 or 7 turns before the foot of the ring and place a loop of 20lb mono on the ring foot and whip over. |
Cut your whipping thread and place through the mono loop and pull it through. You will need to keep your thumb on the thread to stop it loosening off. Once you have pulled the thread through you will be able to trim it off. |
Whip on a small tipping section to finish off your ring and leave a nice crisp edge. The procedure is the same as for whipping on a ring. You will need a maximum of six turns of A grade thread for this . |
Your tipping should look nice and neat, you can now tie off in the same way as for a ring. |
Tying off. |
The whipping procedure is the same for any guide. |
Seal the thread by applying a mix of ProGloss resin finish, working from the inside of the ring foot and working outwards. Work the resin in overlapping 1/8” steps to create a feathered edge. |
A finished ring. If you don’t have a rod turning machine, you will have to rotate the rod by hand every 5 minutes, to stop the epoxy resin sagging during the drying period. |
